The house on Salt Lane
Salt Lane House was built in the 1920s as a family home, and it still feels like one. High ceilings, lime-washed walls, green wooden shutters, and a courtyard in the middle where the whole house meets in the evening.
The house was mended slowly, one room at a time, and opened to guests with just six rooms. Someone from the house is always at home, from early morning until late at night.
Mornings start on the roof terrace with breakfast and the sound of the sea. After that, the day is yours. The promenade is four minutes away. The lanes of the French Quarter are best seen by bicycle, and two old ones wait by the gate for anyone who wants them.
We keep the house small on purpose. With six rooms, we know every guest by name, and the courtyard stays quiet enough to read in.
Breakfast on the terrace
Breakfast is served on the roof terrace from 7:30 to 10, with the sea out of sight but never out of earshot. Most mornings there is dosa or idli with sambar and fresh chutneys, eggs any way you like, fruit from the Goubert market and filter coffee made the slow way.
Tell us the night before if you need an early start, and we will pack it for the road.
Rooms
4 kinds of room, from ₹2,900 a night.

Questions
Is breakfast included?
Yes, with every room. It is served on the roof terrace from 7:30 to 10. If you have an early train, tell us the night before and we will pack it for you.
How far is the beach?
The promenade is a four-minute walk from the gate. Its rocky shore is for walking and sitting, not swimming. For a swim, the sandy beaches north of town are a short drive away, and we can call a taxi.
Can you arrange a pickup?
Yes. We can send a car to Puducherry railway station or to Chennai airport, which is about three hours away. Tell us your arrival time and we will confirm the fare before you travel.
Is there parking?
There is room for two cars in the lane outside the gate. Most guests park once and use the bicycles in town.
